Protagonist
Cloud Strife (クラウド・ストライフ, Kuraudo Sutoraifu)
A brooding mercenary and former Shinra soldier who falsely claims to have been an elite 1st Class SOLDIER. He joins the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE and becomes entangled in a personal vendetta against the fallen hero Sephiroth, while struggling to come to terms with his fragmented memories and manufactured identity.
Protagonist
Tifa Lockhart
Tifa is a martial artist and Cloud Strife's childhood friend from Nibelheim. She runs a bar called "Seventh Heaven" in the slums of Midgar, which secretly serves as a hideout for the eco-terrorist group Avalanche. She is compassionate, strong-willed, and serves as a crucial emotional anchor for Cloud, being one of the few people who knows his true past.
Side character
Aerith Gainsborough
A flower seller from the slums of Midgar who possesses mysterious powers due to her heritage as a Cetra, the last of the "Ancients." She is spirited, kind, and surprisingly flirtatious. Her tragic death while praying for the planet-saving spell "Holy" is one of the most iconic and shocking moments in video game history.
Side character
Barret Wallace
Barret is the hot-headed, muscular leader of the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE, who fights to stop the Shinra Electric Power Company from draining the planet's life energy, Mako. Despite his gruff and aggressive demeanor, he is a devoted father to his adopted daughter, Marlene. His right arm is a prosthetic equipped with a built-in firearm.
