Antagonist
Vaas Montenegro
Vaas is depicted as a capricious and mentally unstable character who antagonizes Far Cry 3's main character Jason Brody, and also serves as his dark psychological mirror. He is later revealed to be a drug-addicted wayward member of the local community of the Rook Islands who betrayed his people and aligned himself with the crime boss Hoyt Volker. His occupation is pirate, smuggler, and human trafficker. He is the brother of Citra Talugmai.
Main Antagonist
Hoyt Volker
Hoyt Volker is a ruthless South African crime lord who runs a massive human trafficking and drug operation across the Rook Islands. He commands the Privateers, a disciplined army of mercenaries, and is arguably far more dangerous than Vaas โ who is actually his subordinate. Hoyt enforces brutal loyalty through fear, executing anyone he suspects of disloyalty. Jason Brody infiltrates his organization undercover and ultimately confronts him in a memorable poker game that escalates into a knife fight.
Main Protagonist
Jason Brody
Players control Jason Brody on the fictional Rook Islands, a tropical archipelago in the Pacific controlled by pirates and mercenaries. He starts out as an ordinary young American tourist, completely out of his depth, but is gradually transformed into a hardened warrior. This transformation is symbolized by the Tatau, a tribal tattoo introduced to Jason by the Rakyat tribe, which grows across his arm as he gains new skills โ representing not just gameplay progression, but his deep psychological and cultural metamorphosis. Jason's arc is one of the more compelling in the series precisely because of how disturbingly well he adapts to violence.
